The Gambia became an independent nation in 1965 after 200 years of British colonial rule. In the pre-colonial era, the country was part of successive African Kingdoms-the Ghana Empire and the Mali Empire. When these empires broke up different parts of the country were ruled by various Senegambian chiefdoms.
Today The Gambia remains calm and stable and boasts of a democratic government.
There are 4 main areas in what is referred to as the palm - fringed coastline,and long stretches of golden sands, over looking the Atlantic Ocean.
Outside this area, there are exotic camps mainly situated on the banks of the famous and beautiful River Gambia situated in the heart of this tiny nation.
Nature lovers will derive much pleasure visiting Abuko Nature Reserve and other varied bird and wildlife sanctuaries as well as cruising on the River Gambia.
The Gambia is a wildlife paradise with a wide variety of flora and fauna and is home to in excess of 500 varieties of birds.
The Gambia has an area of 4361 Sq. Miles and has a population of over 1.5 million belonging to eight ethnic groups, with the official language being English.
